The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
