Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and say, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
